A Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) is a term used to identify products that are produced in a certain geographical area and that have certain characteristics, reputation or quality that are due exclusively or mainly to the specific natural and human factors of that area. A PDO is used to protect and promote products that have a strong association with a particular region and to ensure that consumers can make informed purchasing decisions.

The European Union (EU) has a system in place to protect geographical indications and designations of origin for agricultural products, food and wines. This system, called Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), aims to preserve the reputation of regional foods, promote rural and agricultural activity and help consumers make informed choices about the products they buy.

The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) identifies a product:
(a) originating in a specific place, region or, in exceptional cases, a country;
b) the quality or characteristics of which are mainly or exclusively due to a specific geographical environment with inherent natural and human factors; and
c) whose production stages take place in the defined geographical area.
PDO also plays an important role in supporting local economies and preserving traditional production methods. By protecting and promoting products with PDO designations, small producers and rural communities are able to preserve their livelihoods and traditional way of life.

However, PDOs can also be subject to controversy and controversy. Some countries may feel that PDOs give an unfair advantage to certain regions and may challenge the use of certain designations. In addition, there may be concerns about the potential for fraud, as products may be labeled as having a PDO designation when in fact they do not meet the required criteria.

The registration of Protected Designations of Origin, Protected Geographical Indications and Foods of Traditional Specific Character gives producers the exclusive right to use the registered name of their product, as well as a special sign on the packaging of the product offered on the market.
