PDO AND PGI WINES FROM MUSCAT OTTONEL VARIETY FROM THE BLACK SEA REGION

Home / News

Muscat Ottonel is a white wine grape variety selected in 1852. The temperate-continental climate, strongly influenced by the proximity of the Black Sea, with the characteristic breeze circulation, the relatively dry summer and the long and warm autumn, influence the development of specific characteristics of the variety in this region , making it suitable for PDO and PGI registration.

Muscat Ottonel is an early wine and dessert variety and ripens in the second half of August. It has average growth, average fertility and average yield. The yield varies from 800 to 1200 kg per hectare. It grows well on deep, light, humus-carbonate soils on hilly terrains. It is relatively resistant to drought, cold and gray rot. The bunch is small (61 to 105 years), cylindrical-conical to compact. The grains are medium, spherical, greenish-yellow, sometimes with rusty spots. The skin is thin, tough. The meat is juicy, pleasant to the taste, with a strong nutmeg flavor.

The bunch is small, cylindrical with a short stalk. The grain is small, greenish yellow, juicy, sweet with a pleasant strong musket aroma. At consumption ripeness, the sugar content of grapes is 24%, with titratable acid content – 5.1-8 g/l. The plants have relatively good resistance to low winter temperatures. Yield- vines are moderately growing with good fertility (yield varies from 800 to 1200 kg per hectare).

At consumption ripeness, the sugar content of the grapes is 24%, with titratable acid content: 5.1-8 g/l. Because of the small bunches and small grains, it is not of great importance as a dessert variety, but it is of great importance as a variety for semi-dry and sweet wines. The white dry wines produced from this variety are of high quality, with a rather intense aroma with a floral character reminiscent of violets and indrishes, significant density and moderate freshness. The wines are consumed young. Very good dessert wines are also produced from this variety.

It goes very well with fish dishes, white meats, pasta and pizza with seafood and yellow young cheeses.

The "Sea and Wine" project aims to raise awareness about the benefits of PDO and PGI registration, thereby increasing the competitiveness of wines from the Black Sea region.
