PDO AND PGI WINES FROM GAMAY NOIR VARIETY FROM THE BLACK SEA REGION

Home / News

Gamay noir is a wine grape variety that has found its good place to grow in the Black Sea region. The moderate-continental climate, strongly influenced by the proximity of the Black Sea, with the characteristic breeze circulation, the relatively dry summer and the long and warm autumn, influence the development of specific characteristics of the variety in this region, making it suitable for PDO and PGI registration.

Gamay noir is a medium-ripening wine variety. Its grapes ripen in the first half of September. It has medium growth, high fertility and high yield. It prefers lighter soils, as its grapes are sensitive to rot. It is relatively resistant to drought and low temperatures. The bunch is medium, cylindrical, winged, with one wing, compact. The grain is medium, spherical or irregularly shaped, dark blue, with abundant coating. The zipper is thin, tough. The meat is juicy, with a harmonious taste.

It produces high-quality red table wines with an intense red color, density, harmonious taste and a specific bouquet. The wine made from Gamay noir reveals aromas of cherries and strawberries, and with carbonic maceration – banana, caramel.

Low tannins and relatively high freshness make Gamay noir wines suitable for many dishes. Light style wines go well with dry sausages, terrines and soft cheeses such as Camembert and Brie. More powerful, aged wines pair well with dishes such as duck, chicken and the classic coc o'van. Due to the higher freshness, it is good to cool the lighter wines before consumption

The "Sea and Wine" project aims to raise awareness about the benefits of PDO and PGI registration, thereby increasing the competitiveness of wines from the Black Sea region.
